TWENTY-FOUR

Power of Hearing

Human Quality: Self-Transformation

Dr Ish Sharma was head of orthodontics at the Government Dental College near Old Delhi. Every year, the celebrated doctor conducted a free dental hygiene seminar and dental check-up camps in the months preceding Diwali. This year, the doctor was invited by the government medical colleges in the north-eastern paradise of India. They requested him to cover the Seven Sister States including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. This was Dr Sharma’s first visit to these states.

Accompanied by one local student from north India to assist him on the trip, Dr Sharma was excited about meeting the welcoming people from the east of India. Akul Sharma, who accompanied the senior doctor, was an ambitious first-year student. Akul was selected for the trip primarily for his resourceful, problem-solving and dependable nature. Tall, heavily set with a pot belly, donning a beard and wearing round framed spectacles, Akul looked much older than his age. In contrast, Dr Sharma was tall, clean-shaven and, thanks to regular workouts, had an athletic build.

Picked from the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala, the dental duo was taken to the government guest house. They were to be stationed there for the next three days to cover more than half a dozen events. With back-to-back engagements, Akul’s job was to assist the set-up for the seminar during the free check-up and treatment camps.

Despite their busy schedule, the natural beauty of the place and warmth of their hosts kept the visitors inspired. Over the next three and a half weeks, the duo covered five states. So far, Dr Sharma had conducted fifteen huge public seminars on good dental hygiene, three seminars on advancement in the field of orthodontics for three medical colleges and had examined over 200 patients assisted by Akul and other local dental students.

‘Dr Sharma, I have memorized every single word, all the technical terminologies and the punchlines of your presentation. I bet I can deliver a seminar as good as yours!’ boasted Akul the apprentice.

‘I am sure you can, Akul. Do you want to switch roles for the next seminar?’ asked the senior doctor, amused by the confidence of his young student.

‘Are you serious!? I mean, I will totally smash it out of the park, sir. I have watched you deliver the same presentation over a dozen times,’ said an excited Akul.

‘All right, let me chauffeur you to the next venue as the guest speaker and see how you go. I haven’t driven in these hill roads before, so it would be a refreshing change for me as well,’ offered the doctor, sharing the sporting spirit of his student.

The next morning, following his driver Bitupon’s navigation, Dr Ish Sharma drove ‘Doctor’ Akul Sharma to the venue. Akul aped Dr Sharma’s look. He wore the grey suit he was carrying with a white shirt and shiny black shoes. Excited and a little nervous, Akul went over his presentation slides one final time in the car. His career as a dental surgeon was unofficially starting with a talk on the ‘Best practices for good dental health.
